What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. The exception is medical devices that are surgically implanted or the replacement of such a device.
What Does Assistive Technolgy do for you?
When Assistive Technology is used properly, students are able to progress in the curriculum much the same as other students.
How is Assistive Technology Implemented?
When a student is on an IEP, it is federally mandated that Assistive Technology is considered. Any item that is used to maintain or improve functional capabilities is considered as AT for that individual. It does not need to be a high-powered or expensive device so long as it meets the requirement/definition of AT.
