Hello, I am Debbi Burdick, the very proud superintendent of the Cave Creek Unified School District. This school year, I am focusing my vodcasts on our schools and departments as we always have exciting updates to share.

This month, I am highlighting Sonoran Trails Middle School.  STMS has seventh and eighth graders on its site. To keep the school connected as a smaller community of learners, students are assigned academic teams where they have the same teachers who meet regularly to discuss how to support the students on their team in their learning.  In addition, they have a program called Stinger Success—a 30 min. period each day where all teachers on campus meet with a small group of students to teach a mini-lesson—often on study skills, life skills, or mentoring skills. The students rotate teachers every two weeks. All Stingers also receive a comprehensive curriculum from Second Step—a character education program that teaches students how to successfully navigate difficult issues that are exacerbated in adolescence.

STMS was the first public middle school to offer world language as a core class, like English, Math or Science.  World languages offered are Spanish, French and Chinese. The school also has the Spanish Immersion cohort that matriculates from Desert Willow Elementary School and students spend a third of their day in the target language.  Middle schoolers want choices of electives and STMS delivers. Students may choose from PE, art, chorus, band, guitar, drama, tech skills and an interactive Sci-tech lab where they can dabble in future career choices such as aviation and veterinary medicine.  STMS has tech devices available to all students and uses a blend of typical school resources, as well as interactive technology to personalize student learning.

STMS is a busy place even after school.  There are fourteen club choices, including Robotics, Future Problem Solving and Drama Club, as well as competitive sports, such as basketball, cross country, wrestling and cheerleading.  STMS is located at 5555 E. Pinnacle Vista, Phoenix. To schedule a tour, contact Principal Bill Dolezal at 480-272-8601 or bdolezal@ccusd93.net.

Thank you for listening and I look forward to seeing you in our schools!
