Review of Present Program

  • September 24 - November 24, 2018

    In 2002, CCUSD convened a Human Growth and Development Committee to develop a comprehensive curriculum that met the needs of our families and students.  This past year, we reconvened a committee (with three of the original members, new teachers, administrators and parents) to review and revise the present program.  The committee has met to revise the curriculum and update the materials, preserving the foundation of the work of the 2002 committee, while updating materials to meet student needs.  The updated material will be up for review for 60 days [from September 24, 2018 through November 24, 2018].  We continue to invite feedback from the community and all stakeholders.  Contact Cara Herkamp to review the material.

    The process, governed by ARS 15-721, requires a 60-day review before the formal selection.  After the review period, we will send the materials to the Superintendent, Dr. Debbi Burdick, for review, approval, and recommendation to the Governing Board for formal adoption.  

    Once the Governing Board approves the materials, we will submit a certification of compliance to the State Board of Education.  The certificate shall contain the notarized signatures of both the Governing Board President and Superintendent.  The Arizona Administrative Code, Title 7 (R7-2-303), outlines the requirements of the State Board of Education.

Philosophy Statement

  • The purpose of the Human Growth and Development curriculum is to present accurate, understandable information to help build positive attitudes towards growing up and to aid students in the transition to young adulthood.  The curriculum encompasses more than anatomy and physiology. It also encourages students to understand who they are as unique individuals. The purpose of these lessons is not to take the place of what is taught at home, but rather to supplement that which is taught at home.  The curriculum emphasizes, at every level, that abstinence from sexual intercourse is the only method for avoiding pregnancy that is 100% effective.

    NOTE:  The Human Growth and Development curriculum is an opt-in program. 
    Students must turn in a permission slip signed by a parent/guardian to participate in the curriculum. Students without a signed permission slip, or students whose parents/guardians opt-out of the program, will receive assignments that support the current core curriculum or character education.
