Mrs. Jai "J" Kim

Jai "J" Kim has been a performer and educator, igniting passions for over 20 years.  She has taught music and science at all levels, primary and secondary as well as all exceptionalities from gifted to special education for the Miami-Dade County Public School Systems.  As an AJ Fletcher Music Scholarship recipient, she received dual Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry and Music Performance from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  Her graduate studies took her to Florida International University where she studied with Susan Starr, the 1962 Tchaikovsky Competition Silver Medalist. Jai and her Korean-American-Bahamian-Canadian family have lived on both coasts of the US and abroad where she worked for the California Department of Food and Agriculture and served as Music Outreach Chairman with the California Federation of Music Clubs before moving to the Bahamas. While there, she taught and organized events for GLEE and The Ars Nova Music Club, a music service organization she founded in 2005. Before joining BMES, she was the Music Director at Lyford Cay International School where she led a 49 piece championship Steel Drum Orchestra and a 112 member show choir. She is thrilled to be at Black Mountain after a decade off while raising her 3 children, Catherine who will begin as a Musical Theatre major at the University of Arizona in the fall, Isabelle a rising Junior in High School at a boarding school in Canada and AJ, a fifth grader at BMES. Jai and her husband Alex of 26 years, and her family look forward to becoming a part of the Black Mountain community.
